Timothy’s interest in engineering started in secondary school where he learned fitting, machining and technical drawing skills. After leaving school he enrolled in a Diploma of Graphic Design course at Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE (BRIT), and in 2008 started an engineering apprenticeship. He is currently finishing his apprenticeship at BRIT.
Career and study plans are to:
  • complete his apprenticeship in 2011
  • enroll in the Diploma in Engineering in 2012
  • attend university and study engineering
  • start his own engineering business
Study achievements to date:
  • Completed a Diploma of Graphic Design
  • Completed an overhead crane course
  • Winner of the Castlemaine Business Excellence Award in 2010
  • Winner of the Tom Connor Award as a 3rd year apprentice at BRIT in 2010
Technical Skills:
  • Competent in the use of NC and CNC machines
  • Understands the concept of technical drawings
  • Experienced in all facets of machining and welding
  • Designing and building model aircrafts from concepts
Personal Skills:
  • Good communication skills
  • Willing to help others at both work and TAFE
  • Leads teams at work while carrying out practical projects
Other Achievements:
  • Member of the Rocky Riders Mountain Bike Club
  • Member of the Model Aircraft group

Cody West from Bendigo TAFE has added to his MESAB School Based Apprentice Award (see panel below) and received the Bendigo TAFE School Based Apprentice Award and the Most Outstanding Student Award.

Currently Cody is completing his year 12 Certificate at Bendigo Technical Education College (BTEC), attends trade school at Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE (BRIT) and works as a part-time welding apprentice at Industrial Conveyors.

Career and future plans are to:

  • complete his VCE and apprenticeship

  • complete post trade courses Auto CAD and welding

  • enroll in a Project Management course

  • become a supervisor at work

Study achievements to date:

  • received the year 10 Engineering award at Eaglehawk Secondary College

  • completed the OH&S Construction Induction Course

  • completed Certificate II in First Aid

  • participated in a Builder Boys activity at Eaglehawk Secondary College, which was a program incorporating Certificate II in Building and Engineering

Technical Skills:

  • reading technical drawings

  • understanding the concept of engineering

  • use of hand held portable power tools

Personal Skills:

  • delivered presentations to the BTEC community about his Northern Territory Experience project

  • a good communicator and a strong leader

Other Achievements:

  • worked on community projects at California Gully Primary School

  • part of Northern Territory Experience group that raises money for projects they complete at Indigenous communities in the north

  • plays basketball and football at local clubs
