2010 MESAB Training Awards

MESAB presents 6 awards annually, sponsored by the National Clay and Ceramics Training Council.

This year’s award presentations were held on 29^th April at the Treacy Centre in Parkville.

John Stapleton, Industrial Relations Manager, Training Operations Skills Victoria, together with Lee-Anne Fisher, Chairperson of MESAB and Project Officer with the Australian Industry Group made the presentations.

Callan Ridge was awarded the MESAB Apprentice of 2010 Award.

Callan is enrolled with the Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE and his employer is Australian Industry Group Training Services.

Callan’s enthusiasm was sparked by his involvement in the Energy Breakthrough Program while in year 9.

(The Energy Breakthrough Program began in 1992 in Regional Victoria. Students, teachers, parents and local industry work together to design, build and test a vehicle using innovating technology that minimises environmental impact. Each year in November they congregate in Maryborough to celebrate their achievements.)

Callan concurrently with his apprenticeship has been studying at night school completing units that count towards the Diploma in Engineering. He has a special interest in AutoCAD which is used by his current host employer W McCulloch & Sons Pty. Ltd.

In 2008 and 2009 Callan was awarded 1^st and 2^nd year Mechanical Apprentice of the Year respectively, and was afinalist in 2009 at his TAFE Institute.

Callan is currently studying stage 4 of the Appenticeship. He is a MESAB Young Ambassador in the Careers in Manufacturing Program.

His other interests include being an Australian Pedal Prix Champion and a member of the Bendigo Bike Club.

The MESAB Part-time Apprentice of 2010 Award (School Based) went to Dylan Mason.

Dylan is pursuing a Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication at Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE.

He works part-times as a welding apprentice at McCullochs Hydraulic Engineers.

Dylan undertook a Building Industry pre-apprenticeship course at Eaglehawk Secondary College. Together with his involvement in the Energy Breakthrough project this led to him receiving the Trades Person of the Year Certificate in year 10.

Currently he is completing his VCAL Certificate at Bendigo Technical Education College (BTEC) while also attending trades school at Bendigo TAFE.

Dylan hopes to secure a full time apprenticeship with McCullochs and to pursue studies in both engineering and business fields.

His other interests include basketball, BMX riding, skate boarding and making his car roadworthy for when he gets his probationary license.

Bradley Murray received the MESAB VET in Schools Student of 2010 Award.

He studied the Certificate II in Engineering Studies with Victoria University.

Bradley chose a VET engineering course because it was something different from going to school every day. He enjoys hands on activities and the course could also contribute to securing an apprenticeship.

Bradley has learned many skills while at TAFE and feels that once he completes his year 12 and the VET course he will have an advanced standing in gaining an apprenticeship.

His VCE subject selections and results are testament to Bradley’s dedication to his vocational education.

Bradley possesses good communication and presentation skills which come in handy for a team leader in his sporting organisation.

Currently Bradley plays soccer for the Victorian Premier League U/21 side but in previous years has been awarded the Best & Fairest trophies for the U/12&13 sides.

Bradley’s current goals are to become a qualified tradesperson and to continue playing soccer at a high as possible level.

MESAB Young Industry Ambassador of the Year was awarded to Neil Steyn from Qantas Airways Limited

Neil is currently studying the Certificate IV in Aeroskills at Kangan Institute.

He has been actively promoting the Careers in Manufacturing program over the past 18 months. His efforts have resulted in an increased interest in apprenticeships with Qantas and other organisations. His ability to relate to school students and share his experiences has been exceptional.

In October 2009 Neil was a guest speaker at a breakfast attended by 12 different schools where he had the opportunity to tell his story and promote Manufacturing and Engineering to young people. Feedback from his information sessions has been extremely positive.

Neil has always loved planes since he was young and wanted to fly them. If he couldn’t fly them, the next best thing was to fix them.

Neil’s goal is to finish his apprenticeship and keep the planes flying safely.

MESAB Trainee of 2010

Alan Aston received the MESAB Trainee of 2010 Award.

Alan is studying for the Certificate IV in Competitive Manufacturing. His employer is Veyance Belting, a company that has signed the Victorian Skills Pledge. His training is provided by New Futures Vocational Consulting Pty. Ltd.

Alan joined Veyance Belting in 2001 as a shop floor operator (associate) and over the next 4 years achieved 3 internal level qualifications on the machines in the Belting Plant. During this time Alan Aston

he has travelled around Australia and South East Asia on behalf of the company.

Not letting the grass grow under his feet, Alan has been busy developing his skills by completing his Certificate III in Process Manufacturing and a Traineeship in Certificate IV in Competitive Manufacturing.

While he has been offered promotions during his off-shore work, he has chose to further his career at Veyance Belting. He was promoted to shift supervisor two years ago during which time he developed a passion for training. As a member of work teams on the shop floor Alan has learned the value of team work and effective communication.

He hopes to complete his Certificate IV in Training and Assessment which will enable him to conduct accredited training.

Alan has served as a committee member on the company’s Social Club and is currently on the plant’s Safety Committee.

Other achievements include:

Completed a 5 day OH&S course

Completed a Level 2 First Aid course

Member of a Trail Bike Club

Plays soccer for the local club and assists with the junior teams at the local level

MESAB TAFE Student of 2010

Peter Flentje is studying the Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology at RMIT University.

He commenced the Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology articulation program in 2008. This program, at RMIT University, is a group of subjects selected from the Advanced Diploma of Technology and the Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology (Principal Technical Officer) courses. The program has been negotiated with the Higher Education Sector of RMIT University so as to enable Peter to articulate into the 3rd year of the Bachelor of Engineering Undergraduate Degree Course.

Peter’s academic performance to date can only be described as outstanding. He has gained High Distinctions for every graduate subject thus far in the program, with scores of 90% and above.

In 2009 Peter was chosen to participate in an RMIT Industry Traineeship Scheme with the Defence Science & Technology Organisation (DSTO), where he gained valuable engineering experience.

He has also been involved in the following projects:

Fatigue testing of materials at the Air Vehicle Structures Laboratory.

Research project with DMTC in the area of industry composites.

Aside from his studies, Peter has been previously involved in a range of occupations in the areas of underground and open-cut mining, which have enabled him to firm up his strong interest in the Mechanical Engineering Field.

Peter is looking forward to completing his TAFE studies so that he can move into his degree course and become an engineer.
